Course Details

This extensive (32-hour) course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to apply immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness on board a vessel. Participants will gain knowledge of marine first aid equipment, and the transferring of patients from a ship. All aspects of course are focused in a marine setting. Course meets the requirements of Transport Canada outlined in Transport Publication (TP) 13008E.

Providing first aid in a marine environment can be a challenging situation so learn from the best with many scenarios in the classroom based on these challenging marine situations.

Includes information on environmental emergencies, calling for help in a marine environment and accessing the ship’s emergency first aid supplies.

  • Respiratory emergencies
  • Airway and ventilation
  • Circulatory emergencies
  • Bleeding
  • Shock
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Musculoskeletal injuries
  • Head and spine injuries
  • Chest, abdominal, and pelvic injuries
  • Sudden illnesses
  • Poisoning
  • Heat‐ and cold‐related emergencies
  • Reaching and moving people
  • Multiple casualty incidents
  • Toxicological hazards aboard ship
  • Radio medical advice
  • Pharmacology
  • Sterilization


All courses are taught by certified Canadian Red Cross Instructors.

On successful completion which includes hands-on participation throughout the course and a short thirty question written test a certificate valid for three (3) years will be issued.

Transport Canada certification will be issued directly by Red Cross upon successful completion.

Recertification of this course is not allowed by Transport Canada regulation.

The course textbook is available as an online resources ahead of the course dates so that participants can do the suggested pre-reading.

All Red Cross certificates and textbooks can be accessed by the participant once they are registered into the online Canadian Red Cross system.

Course Prerequisites

None. Participants must have the ability to understand the course material, actively participate in the hands-on activities throughout the course hours and successfully complete the required written exam.
