Course Details

The First Responder course is designed to prepare you for dealing with life threatening emergencies in a pre-hospital setting along with other members of the EMS system.

Students will acquire a full complement of basic skills to prepare them for carrying out all critical lifesaving duties as a First Responder Provider.

Students will be trained to:

1) perform an organized and prioritized patient assessment – Priority Action Approach

2) intervene in life-threatening traumatic injuries, bleeding emergencies and potentially life threatening medical conditions such as diabetic reactions, anaphylaxis and congestive heart failure (CHF);

3) manage a patient in cardiac arrest including CPR and the use of Automatic External Defibrillation (AED);

4)  recognize and manage a patient with a spinal injury and prepare them for transport with the other members of the EMS system

5) record and report patient information for the next level in the EMS system.

Students will gain valuable experience through hands-on practical sessions, accompanied by short lectures. The course is taught by experienced and practicing Fire Fighter or Paramedic Instructors.

Graduates of the HeartSafe EMS First Responder course will also receive a licence from the Ministry of Health Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (EMALB) at the First Responder level.

Many graduates go on to careers in the fire services and may also step up to the next level in the EMS system – Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level course and license.

 Course Goals

  • To prepare students for further education or a career within health care whether with the Fire Services or other agencies requiring the FR certification/license
  • To provide successful students with a First Responder certification and license
  • To provide successful students with the Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification
